NRW tests AI in tax processing - faster notices for citizens

From May 2025, the North Rhine-Westphalia tax authorities will launch a pilot project using artificial intelligence to support tax assessment. An AI module will be used in four tax offices (Brühl, Bielefeld-Außenstadt, Hamm and Lübbecke) to automatically recognize and process simple tax cases. The aim is to issue notices more quickly and reduce the workload for case processing.

The AI complements the existing risk management system and initially focuses on classic employee cases with clearly structured information. The usual checking processes are retained - but employees can concentrate more on complex cases.

The system was developed in the NRW tax authorities' own data center. With the new data center in Kaarst, the expansion of the digital infrastructure is being systematically continued. The aim is a secure, efficient and modern tax administration - with AI as a tool, but with clear responsibility for the employees.
